Venice Canals
A Peaceful Oasis of Historic Canals in the Heart of Los Angeles
About the Venice Canals
The Venice Canals are a hidden gem in Los Angeles, offering a peaceful escape from the city's hustle and bustle. Built in 1905 by developer Abbot Kinney, these man-made canals were inspired by the famous waterways of Venice, Italy, and were designed to create a unique residential community.
Originally part of a larger canal system that included over 16 miles of waterways, today's Venice Canals consist of six remaining canals: Eastern Canal, Grand Canal, Linnie Canal, Carroll Canal, Sherman Canal, and Howland Canal. These historic waterways are lined with charming homes, pedestrian bridges, and lush landscaping.
The Venice Canals Historic District is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and offers visitors a glimpse into early 20th-century Los Angeles architecture and urban planning. The area is perfect for leisurely walks, photography, and experiencing a different side of LA life.
History of the Venice Canals
The Venice Canals were the vision of Abbot Kinney, a wealthy businessman who purchased land in what was then a marshy area south of Santa Monica. Inspired by his travels to Venice, Italy, Kinney set out to create "Venice of America" - a resort town with canals, gondolas, and Italian-style architecture.
Construction began in 1904, and by 1905, the first canals were completed. The original development included amusement piers, hotels, and a network of canals that allowed visitors to travel by gondola throughout the area. The canals were connected to the ocean, allowing for boat traffic and creating a unique transportation system.
Over time, many of the canals were filled in to make way for roads and development. By the 1920s, most of the original canal system had been converted to streets. However, the six remaining canals in the residential area were preserved and continue to be maintained today.
In 1982, the Venice Canals Historic District was added to the National Register of Historic Places, ensuring the preservation of this unique piece of Los Angeles history for future generations.
